Cambridge, MA…. Cancer Research Simplified (CRS)’s cancer scientist CEO and Founder, Ayguen Sahin, MSc, PhD gave a full lecture on colon cancer at its third public cancer symposium on colon cancer, held on July 28th, 2015 at Cambridge College in Cambridge, MA.
Award-winning cancer scientist, Dr. Ayguen Sahin’s passion in cancer education and bringing science “down” to people, thus bridging the gap between cancer scientists and cancer patients, made her found two and a half years ago the Boston-based, nonprofit organization on cancer education, Cancer Research Simplified (CRS), aiming to communicate scientific research to cancer patients and the general public.
“During my doctoral work and research in Germany and postdoctoral fellowship and faculty membership at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, I felt a growing gap between cancer scientists and cancer patients and thus, the need of bridging this gap.” Dr. Sahin founded Cancer Research Simplified (CRS) in January 2013, which earn several awards in 2014, including the 2014 Top-Rated Nonprofit Award by Great Nonprofits based on the votes and reviews of the public.
Dr. Sahin provided a full colon cancer lecture as the third lecture in the Cancer Symposium series of CRS. Sponsored by Genentech, Boston Thermography Center, The Print House, MBTA, Life Alive Organic Café, Flatbread Company, Iggy’s Bread, J.P. Licks, and Trader Joe’s, with the volunteering help of Jamie at BWH/HMS and CRS team member and volunteer at the event, Emily, the lecture provided simplified, factual information on colon cancer prevention and early detection, screening, current treatment strategies, clinical trials, new research and drug approvals, life after survival, and nutritional facts.
“While educating the public on all types of cancer through our educational videos on YouTube and our written materials on our website for the past two and a half years, we know now the ‘exact’ way of simplifying the educational materials we write for our audience to be able to understand,” said Dr. Sahin. “I was more than pleased to see that lecture was extremely well received, and left a big smile on attendees’ faces, having learned so many valuable information on cancer education and I shared with them on cancer prevention on daily basis. The hugs I have gotten after the lecture was just heartwarming, knowing that we truly helped people – and that’s what we’re working for!”
The audience included cancer patients, family members, general public, survivors, and people who have lost their loved ones to cancer. “I will give more of a priority having a better diet, be aware of early screenings, and create awareness with the right information and in CRS’s website,” said one attendee when asked what they would do differently as a result of attending the program. Another attendee responded “I will eat more healthy and do more research on CRS’s website,” while another responded as “I will ask more specific questions of my Doctor.” Impressed by the lecture, one of the attendees praised the lecturer, Dr. Sahin, on CRS’s social media site. "The instructor was full of passion and knowledge as well as multi-lingual. She's a geneticist, who wants to get information out to the public in a way that the "lay" person can understand. Consider liking her page and learning more about what this group does."
