Cancer Scientist CEO of Nonprofit ‘Simplifies’ All Aspects of Prostate Cancer at its Sponsored Lecture

Brookline, Mass…. Cancer Research Simplified (CRS)’s cancer scientist CEO and Founder, Ayguen Sahin, MSc, PhD gave a full lecture on prostate cancer at its fourth sponsored public cancer lecture held on November 10th, 2015 at the Brookline Public Library in Brookline, MA.

Award-winning cancer scientist, Dr. Ayguen Sahin’s passion in cancer education and bringing science “down” to people, thus bridging the gap between cancer scientists and cancer patients, made her found two and a half years ago the Boston-based, global nonprofit organization on cancer education, Cancer Research Simplified (CRS), aiming to communicate scientific research in a simplified, non-technical way and in multiple languages to cancer patients and the general public around the globe.

“During my doctoral work and research in Germany and postdoctoral fellowship and faculty membership at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, I felt a growing gap between cancer scientists and cancer patients and thus, the need of bridging this gap.” Dr. Sahin founded Cancer Research Simplified (CRS) in January 2013, which earned several awards in 2014, including winning twice in a row the Top-Rated Nonprofit Award by Great Nonprofits in 2014 and 2015 based on the votes and reviews of the public.

Dr. Sahin provided a full prostate cancer lecture as the fourth lecture in the Cancer Symposium Series 2015 of CRS.  Sponsored by Genentech, Boston Thermography Center, The Print House, MBTA, Life Alive Organic Café, Flatbread Company, Iggy’s Bread, J.P. Licks, and Trader Joe’s, with the volunteering help of Jamie at BWH/HMS and CRS team member and volunteer at the event, BusraYilmaz, the lecture provided simplified, factual information on prostate cancer prevention and early detection, screening, current treatment strategies, clinical trials, new research and drug approvals, life after survival, and nutritional facts.

“While educating the public on all types of cancer through our educational videos on YouTube and our written materials on our website for the past two and a half years, we know now the ‘exact’ way of simplifying the educational materials we write for our audience to be able to understand,” said Dr. Sahin. “I was more than pleased to see that lecture was extremely well received, and left a big smile on attendees’ faces, having learned so many valuable information on prostate cancer and the info I shared with them on cancer prevention on daily basis. The ‘solely highly positive’ reviews we have gotten after the lecture was exceptionally rewarding, knowing that we truly helped people – and that’s what we’re working for!”

The audience included cancer patients, family members, general public, and patients on active surveillance. “I will be conscious of maintaining my exercise, supplementation, and nutrition program,” said one attendee when asked what they would do differently as a result of attending the program. Another attendee responded, “I will get a PSA test and try to eat better diet and get more exercise,” while another responded as “I will be focusing on my active surveillance.”  Impressed by the lecture, one of the attendees praised the lecturer, Dr. Sahin, "You really are a scientist who "knows her stuff “."

1st and 2nd winners of CRS’s Cancer Quiz Game receive their prizes from Dr. Ayguen Sahin, CEO and Founder of
Cancer Research Simplified.

CRS’s much-loved game at all of its events, the CRS Cancer Quiz Game™, found its 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners after the lecture, while the 2nd prize was shared between two winners. “Like the Colon Cancer Lecture I gave back in July, I was truly amazed that not only we have gotten the 1st prize winner who have had 10 right out of ten questions, but also that we have gotten two 2nd prize winners who have had 9 right out of ten questions, which showed how us how well the information provided was understood,” said Dr. Sahin.

Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month - FDA approval - Onivyde - Cancer Research Simplified
November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
Did you know that FDA approved a new treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer on October 22, 2015?

Onivyde (irinotecan liposome injection), in combination with fluorouracil and leucovorin, was approved by the FDA (The U.S. Food and Drug Administration) to treat patients with advanced (metastatic) pancreatic cancer who have been previously treated with gemcitabine-based chemotherapy.

The FDA granted Priority Review and orphan drug designations for Onivyde.
Priority review status is granted to applications for drugs that, if approved, would be a significant improvement in safety or effectiveness in the treatment of a serious condition.

Read more about this approval here.
