Dangerous heavy metals such as lead and cadmium found in dark chocolate
Aygün Sahin, MSc, PhD | CEO, President, and Cancer Lead, Cancer Education and Research Institute (CERI)
Consumer Reports identified both cadmium and lead in popular chocolate brands.
One Trader Joe's bar was found to contain high levels of both lead and cadmium. One Trader Joe's bar was found to contain high levels of both lead and cadmium. Consumer Report, a non-profit organization, tested 28 different dark chocolate bars from popular brands (see below).
They found that all but five of them contained high enough levels of contaminants. Eating an ounce per day could put an adult over the levels typically considered safe. Major risk of heavy metals is due to its build up in the body over time in repeated tiny doses, causing health issues. Exposure to lead is linked to cognitive impairment, particularly in children, as it can lead to developmental issues and lower IQ. It can also cause reproductive problems in adults, as well as high blood pressure and neurological issues. High levels of cadmium is considered cancer-causing and exposure over time is linked to kidney disease and fragile bones.
Dark chocolate tends to be higher in heavy metals than milk chocolate. This is because dark chocolate contains more cacao, which can be contaminated either from the soil its grown in, or after the beans are picked. Milk chocolate has fewer flavonoids, and more additives such as sugar. Unfortunately, now it has been found that nutrient-rich cacao can be the source of the contaminants (heavy metals).
The levels found in the testing don't violate any laws, as there are no federal limits for lead and cadmium in most foods.
One serving of dark chocolate is about one ounce, or around 30 grams.

- High levels of lead: Chocolate from brands including Tony's, Lindt, Hershey's, and Hu.
- High levels of cadmium: Chocolate from brands including Lindt, Dove, and Beyond Good.
