BOARD MEMBER EXPECTATIONS
Time Commitment
- Attend 4 quarterly board meetings (2-3 hours each, virtual option available)
- Serve on at least 1 committee (2-4 hours/quarter)
- Total: 8-15 hours per month average
- Give or Get $2,500 annually ($1,000 for patient advocate role)
- "Give" = personal donation
- "Get" = fundraise from personal network
- Can be combination of both
- Make minimum 3 strategic introductions annually (funders, partners, media, etc.)
- Provide expertise in your area (clinical, operational, fundraising, etc.)
- Review and provide feedback on key initiatives
- Represent organization publicly when appropriate
- Fiduciary oversight
- Strategic planning participation
- Policy review and approval
- Performance evaluation of organization and CEO
- Ensure mission alignment
- Two (2) years, with a maximum three (3) consecutive terms of office.

Step 2: Initial Review (December 21-22, 2025) Leadership team reviews all applications and selects candidates for interviews.
Step 3: Interviews (December 23-29, 2025)
Step 4: Reference Checks (December 28-30, 2025) Final candidates: 2 professional references contacted
Step 5: Board Approval & Invitation (December 30-31, 2025) Current board votes on new members. Formal invitations extended.
Step 6: Onboarding (January 1-15, 2026)

- Cover letter addressing:
- Why you want to serve on our board
- What specific expertise/connections you bring
- How you align with our mission
- Your availability for January 1, 2026 start date
- Board application form

- 45-minute virtual interview
- Meet with leadership
- Discuss expertise, commitment, fit
- Answer questions about role and organization
Step 4: Reference Checks (December 28-30, 2025) Final candidates: 2 professional references contacted
Step 5: Board Approval & Invitation (December 30-31, 2025) Current board votes on new members. Formal invitations extended.
Step 6: Onboarding (January 1-15, 2026)
- Welcome packet
- Orientation session
- Committee assignments
- First board meeting: Mid-January 2026
