GLOBAL CANCER ORGANIZATION CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION ON MICROPLASTICS POLLUTION
February 11, 2025
CAMBRIDGE, MA - February 11, 2025 - “As a cancer scientist with 25 years of experience and the founder, CEO, and cancer lead of a global cancer organization, Cancer Education and Research Institute®, recipient of a United Nations UNIATF Award 2019, I am issuing an urgent call to action regarding the growing threat of microplastics pollution. While previous government advisories on alcohol and tobacco are commendable, we must now turn our attention to the pervasive and often overlooked danger of microplastics,” Dr. Ayguen Sahin.
"For over a decade, we've been sounding the alarm on microplastics," said Dr. Sahin. ”The time for decisive action is now. We cannot afford to wait any longer."
Recent studies project that by 2025, a staggering 150 million tons of plastic waste will be circulating in our oceans. Microplastics, particles smaller than five millimeters, are infiltrating our food chain, water supplies, and even the air we breathe.
"Our organization has long been at the forefront of educating the public about environmental carcinogens,” Dr. Sahin continued. "The ubiquity of microplastics presents a clear and present danger to public health that we can no longer ignore."
While applauding previous government progress on tobacco and alcohol awareness, Dr. Sahin emphasized the need for similar attention to microplastics. "As we make strides in tobacco and alcohol awareness, we must also address the increasing threat of microplastics. The public needs clear, science-based guidance on this pervasive environmental hazard."
Cancer Education and Research Institute® calls for immediate action, including:
