GLOBAL CANCER ORGANIZATION APPLAUDS SURGEON GENERAL'S ADVISORY ON ALCOHOL AND CANCER RISK
January 9, 2025
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, USA – January 9, 2025 – Cancer Education and Research Institute® (CERI), a leading global cancer organization, the recipient of a United Nations award, welcomes the U.S. Surgeon General’s recent advisory on the link between alcohol consumption and cancer risk. This long-overdue step aligns with the scientific evidence that CERI has been compiling, analyzing, reporting on, and educating the public and patients about for over a decade.
"Finally!" said Dr. Ayguen Sahin, MSc, PhD, a cancer scientist with 25 years of experience and the founder and CEO of CERI. "The Surgeon General's advisory validates what our organization has long emphasized - that alcohol is a significant, yet preventable, cause of cancer.”

The advisory, released on January 3, 2025, by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, highlights alcohol as the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the United States, following tobacco and obesity. It underscores the need for increased public awareness and recommends updating warning labels on alcoholic beverages to include cancer risk information.
"For years, we've been at the forefront of educating the public about the alcohol-cancer link," Dr. Sahin continued. "Our decade-long efforts and uniquely designed education, awareness, and patient programs have proven to be effective for the public and patients alike, but there's still work to be done. This advisory will significantly boost our ongoing mission to raise awareness and reduce alcohol-related cancer risks."
While commending the government's progress in addressing tobacco and alcohol risks, Dr. Sahin also called for similar attention to other potential health concerns. "As we make strides in tobacco and alcohol awareness, we must also address the increasing marketing and use of marijuana products, particularly among young adults. The public needs clear, science-based guidance on all substances that may impact their health."
CERI remains committed to its mission of providing worldwide access to high-quality cancer care, research, and education. This advisory aligns perfectly with our ongoing efforts to disseminate crucial information about cancer prevention and risk factors. We stand ready to collaborate with health authorities, policymakers, and the public to further reduce the burden of alcohol-related cancers.
