CANCER EDUCATION AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE® EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER POTENTIAL IMPACTS ON GLOBAL CANCER CARE AND PREVENTION
January 23, 2025
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS - January 23, 2025 - Cancer Education and Research Institute®, a United Nations-awardee global cancer organization, expresses deep concern regarding recent developments that may affect international health cooperation and information sharing. These changes could have significant implications for cancer patients, prevention efforts, and public health worldwide.
"Our organization has consistently advocated for robust international health cooperation. In March 2020, we raised similar concerns about global health partnerships, which were covered by The Boston Globe. Dr. Ayguen Sahin stated at the time, 'Cancer is a disease that requires fast treatment and diagnosis. If people don’t know if they have cancer, they have to get to the doctors to be diagnosed. My concern is the longer this [public health crisis] goes on, it could affect cancer patients on many levels.' Today, we find ourselves reiterating these crucial points in light of recent developments."
Key points of concern:
Dr. Ayguen Sahin, CEO, founder, and cancer lead at Cancer Education and Research Institute®, states: "Our organization has worked tirelessly to improve cancer prevention and care globally. We've witnessed firsthand how international collaboration and open communication channels are vital in addressing cancer and other health crises. Any disruption to these channels could have severe consequences for patients and the public worldwide."
Cancer Education and Research Institute® emphasizes the following:
Dr. Sahin emphasizes, "We urge all parties involved to consider the profound impact on cancer patients and public health. Our experiences during the pandemic have starkly illustrated the critical nature of seamless international healthcare cooperation. Tragically, we witnessed the loss of a 2.5 years old cancer patient from overseas who was unable to access vital treatment in the U.S. This occurred due to hospital shutdowns for cancer patients, who were deemed 'non-urgent,' and restrictions on non-local patients amid the pandemic overload. Such heart-wrenching incidents underscore the dire consequences of disrupting global health partnerships and the flow of medical information and services.”
Cancer Education and Research Institute® remains committed to its mission of improving cancer care and prevention globally, and will continue to advocate for policies and practices that support this goal.
